twist yarn

  • 1 Soft Twist Yarn

A term used in the hoisery trade to mean yarn with less than normal turns per inch. Yarns vary in softness and according to the amount of twist are: - Soft, X soft, XX soft, and XXX soft.

  • 2 Twist On Twist

Two-fold yarn in which the twist is in the same direction as the twist in the single yarns. Such yarn has more elasticity than if reverse twist were used. Twist on twist increases the turns per inch in the single threads, thus giving a harder folded yarn. This method of twisting is usual for voile and sewing yarns.

  • 3 Twist

  • 4 Twist Cops

Large mule cops of warp yarn which is rewound upon bobbins, cones or cheeses for the warping frame. A usual size of twist cop is 11/4-in. diameter, 71/4-in. to 8-in. long for medium and fine yarns.

  • 5 Mouline Twist

A fancy yarn composed of four threads doubled together. A hard twist two-fold thread is doubled with three other single threads in a reverse direction and with fewer turns per inch. These fancy yarns are also made of three threads doubled together in which case the hard-twist yarn is thicker than the others. Sometimes silk is used as one of the threads to give further character.

  • 6 Hard Twist Yarns

All spun yarns have twist, but a hard twist yarn has more twist than usual, such extra twist or turns per inch are for some special purpose, such as for weaving voiles, gaberdines, crepes, canvas, etc. Any twist more than the square root of the count multiplied by 4 is termed " hard twist " (see Twist). Botany yarns used for crepons, permos, crepes, etc., are hard twisted.

  • 7 Cop Twist

Yarn intended for warps, built in cop form (see Twist Cops)

  • 8 Double Spun Yarn

A single yarn made as a cheap imitation of a two-fold yarn by being subjected to two separate twistings. The term really signifies double twisting. The yam is spun on the mule with soft twist and, weft way, then gassed and again twisted at the ring doubler weft way. Thus the twist at the ring doubler is added to the twist at the mule. It is a super quality yarn and spun free from knots and other faults, superior to the ordinary single-twist, but not equal to two-fold. It is of greater strength than ordinary yarn.

  • 9 Crepe Yarn

Specially hard-twisted yams, containing from 30 to 70 turns per inch and produced in singles and doubled. The usual range is 40's to 100's single, 2/80's to 2/200's doubled. The yarns are used for voiles, crepe-de-Chines and fabrics where the aim is to produce crinkles through the strong tendency of the yarns to contract in length. In cotton, yams are made up to six- or nine-fold for special purposes. Crepe yarns are also produced in wool, silk and rayon. An official definition states: Silk, rayon, cotton or wool threads may be given a twist of a specific number of turns per inch. The thread contracts in the twisting, and the evenness of the twist, the type of twist, and the number of turns determines to a definite degree the character of the face of the texture for which the twisted yarn is used. The twist in the yam is set by a process of steaming. The twist co-incidently increases the strength of a thread to a limited extent. The twist may have a bearing upon the lustre of woven or knitted fabrics and upon the capacity of dye penetration and absorption. A crepe yarn may consist of a single thread twisted one way, or of several threads joined by throwing into one thread by a combination of twists.

  • 10 Voile Yarn

Specially hard-twisted yarn for making voile fabrics. Single 50's and 2/100's are usual counts, although other counts are spun. Two-fold voile yarns are usually doubled twist-on-twist, e.g., the two-fold twisting is in the same direction as the twist in the singles. Standard twist 38 turns per inch.

  • 11 Chain Yarn

A three-fold yarn made from a thick soft spun thread twisted with another thread of finer counts and a medium twist. This double thread is again twisted with a third and still finer thread, but with the twist in the reverse way. The illustration shows a cloth in which a chain yarn is used for figuring, Both warp and weft are utilised and by weaving these fancy yarns on an open ground cloth a reversible fabric is obtained. The ground cloth is 36 X 40 per inch, 50's/50's cotton yarns and figuring cham yarn 12 X 12 per inch (see Yarns)

  • 12 Pearly Yarn

This is a high-class two-fold yarn and used for embroidery and as an effect yarn in fabrics. A " pearly " effect is given by the screw-like twist on the two singles. The singles from 70's to 90's combed yarn are twisted from 40 to 50 turns per inch, and doubled with the twist in the reverse way, about 20 turns per inch.

  • 13 Grenadine Yarn (Thrown Silk)

Definition by the Silk Association of America. Grenadine yarn is a yarn composed of more than one thread of which each individual thread has been twisted in the same direction, then doubled with a reverse twist, each twist having a minimum of approximately the following number of turns per inch, depending on the number of threads used: two threads, 13/15 denier or equivalent 32 turns per inch minimum; three threads, same denier, 30 turns minimum; four threads, same denier 28 turns minimum. When more than four threads are used, the number of turns will decrease in the above proportion.

Dictionary of the English textile terms > Grenadine Yarn (Thrown Silk)

  • 14 Relative Twist Of Yarns

The same relative twist is produced when the angle of twist on the surface of two different thicknesses of thread is the same. The relative number of turns per inch of two similar yarns is in the proportion of the square root of the count number; thus for 16's and 25's yarns the relative turns are as 4 to 5, and if 16's yarn has 12 turns per inch, 25's yarn will have 15 turns.

A fancy yarn composed of three threads, two are doubled and the third is added in a reverse twist (see Chain Yarn)

  • 17 Knop Yarn

A fancy yarn with lumps or thick places appearing at intervals. The knops can be either the same colour as the ground thread or in other colours. It consists of one or more foundation yarns usually two-ply and a coarse hard-twisted yarn, the latter forms the knops. The foundation yarn is delivered slowly at intermittent speed while the delivery of the coarse yarn is quicker and continuous resulting in the intermittent accumulation of this thread which forms the knops. A third thread may be doubled with the former group with twist in the opposite direction and about half the turns. Knop yarn is used to ornament numerous fabrics and is most often used as weft.

  • 18 Mock Twist

A fancy single woollen yarn made by feeding dyed and undyed stock intermittently in the spinning frame. It imitates the " double and twist " woollen yarn but the two colours are not as sharply outlined.

  • 19 Balanced Twist

The twist is assumed to be balanced in a two-fold yarn when half as many turns per inch have been inserted in the doubling process, as were previously inserted in the opposite direction in each single thread. Theoretically, each turn of reverse twist in the doubling takes a turn out of the single twist, and in twisting together two single threads which contain, say, 20 turns per inch, the twist will be balanced when 10 turns of reverse T. have been made. It is not usual to obtain balanced T. in a two-fold yam, the number of twists in which more nearly approaches the number in the single threads, and, in this condition, very little twist is left in the single threads. (W. Watson.)

  • 20 Crossband Yarn

Yarn in which the twist runs from right to left looking up the yarn. It is opposite to open-band yarn. See Open Band.
